Terms
- Open-source software – computer software whose source code is available under a copyright license that permits users to study, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified form. It is the most prominent example of open source development (Open-source software|Wikipedia).
- Cross-platform – a term which can refer to computer programs, operating systems, computer languages, programming languages, or other computer software and their implementations which can be made to work on multiple computer platforms (Cross-platform|Wikipedia).
- Wiki – a type of Web site that allows the visitors themselves to easily add, remove, and otherwise edit and change some available content, sometimes without the need for registration (Wiki|Wikipedia).
- Blog – a website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in a reverse chronological order. The term “blog” is a portmanteau of “Web log” (Blog|Wikipedia).
- RSS – a simple XML-based system that allows users to subscribe to their favorite websites. Using RSS, webmasters can put their content into a standardized format, which can be viewed and organized through RSS-aware software or automatically conveyed as new content on another website (RSS|Wikipedia).
- Podcast – a multimedia file distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers. The term was meant as a portmanteau of “broadcasting” and “iPod” (Podcast|Wikipedia).
- Vlog – Videoblog, a portmanteau combining video, web, and log, (usually shortened to vlog) is a blog that includes video (Vlog|Wikipedia).
- Social network service – social software specifically focused on the building and verifying of online social networks for whatever purpose. Many social networking services are also blog hosting services (Social network service|Wikipedia).
- Aggregator – client software that uses a web feed to retrieve syndicated web content such as weblogs, podcasts, vlogs, and mainstream mass media websites, or in the case of a search aggregator, a customized set of search results (Aggregator|Wikipedia).
- Content management system – a computer software system for organizing and facilitating collaborative creation of documents and other content. A content management system is often a web application used for creating and managing websites and web content. Alternatively, content management systems (CMS) can also be used for storing and publishing documentation such as operators’ manuals, technical manuals, sales guides, etc (Content management system|Wikipedia).
- Virtual learning environment – (Course Management System) a software system designed to facilitate teachers in the management of educational courses for their students, especially by helping teachers and learners with course administration. The system can often track the learners’ progress, which can be monitored by both teachers and learners. While often thought of as primarily tools for distance education, they are most often used to supplement the face-to-face classroom (Virtual learning environment|Wikipedia).
- Student information system – a software application for educational establishments to manage student data. Student information systems provide capabilities for entering student test and other assessment scores, building student schedules, tracking student attendance, and managing many other student-related data needs in a school, college or university. Also known as student information management system (SIMS, SIM) or student records system (SRS) (Student information system|Wikipedia).
