New ISTE NETS-S Released

The opening Session on Monday was the public announcement of the release of the new ISTE NETS-S (National Educational Technology Standards for Students. ISTE released the first version of the NETS-S 9 years ago. The refresh of the standards involved gathering input and reviews from people in all 50 states and 22 countries.

The new standards reflect the need for a new focus on Technology and Learning and new skills. The goal of the standards is to serve as a guide for:

“What students should know and be able to do to learn
effectively and live productively in an increasingly digital world …”

The new standards are already being used in the preparation of documents and planning for several groups, including several professional educational associations.

The new standards move well beyond the “how-to” of technology and emphasize the learning first. Many states are looking at the new standards as a basis for their technology standards. The refresh of the NETS-T (standards for teachers) is now underway.
