KTI Geocaching Grant Update
My software Integration class here at Cambridge Springs High School is very excited to be getting some geocaching equipment to work with! The class borrowed GPS units this year and really got excited about placing caches and making travel bugs, all while meeting some of our technology standards as well as some math and science standards. Temporary caches were hidden for them to find to learn how to use the GPS units and then we set off to find a cache that we found nearby on geocaching.com. Since there was only one cache listed on geocaching.com in our town, the students decided to make a few–Getting the correct coordinates, making descriptions, creating containers, logging the cache on geocaching.com, etc. We had a few problems with coordinates that were obtained and some of the containers that failed at being waterproof, but with the grant we hope to purchase some containers and be able to double check our coordinates since we will have the GPS units here at the school to use. We will be creating some historical caches in the spring, which will list historical data about our town for our History Club students to find as they take the historical tour of our town, which is done each year.
The students that did not choose to make a cache, created travel bugs to set off around the world. We will be tracking the cities, states, and countries that the bugs travel to throughout the school year. We will also be tallying the miles that they travel. Thank you so much for making this grant available. Happy Geocaching!
